From the Gym Floor – May 2012

Shane caught up with Alan from Hard On Fitness for a brief interview about the benefits of using a Personal Trainer. Personal Trainer

Shane

Hi Alan, what would you say are the main benefits of training with a personal trainer?

Alan

Number one, Clients tell me over and over it becomes a commitment, like a doctor or work appointment, where they need to turn up each time.  Where if they were going to gym by themselves, there’s no firm commitment for them to turn up each time.

Number two, in my view, training with a personal trainer gives you the safety of learning the proper training techniques to avoid injury.

Personal Trainers can regularly update the training program to keep the Client motivated and interested in training and staying fit.  There is also ongoing advice on healthy eating plans and reaching Clients’ goals.  Personal training can also be used to target specific areas the Client would like to improve.

When working out with a Personal Trainer the training intensity is kept constant throughout the session, keeping the heart rate up and improving results.  Time and time again it has been shown that people gain results a lot faster with a Personal Trainer than by training on their own.

Shane

What kinds of personal training sessions are available, cardio, weights etc.?

Alan

Personal Trainers will talk to new Clients before starting training and ask about what goals the Client wants to achieve.  And then from this, the Trainer will sit down and work out the best customised training program for them.  This could be cardio exercise, a combination of cardio and weights, or outdoor one-on-one sessions, or running.  Most training programs will include some level of weights modules though, for full improvement of Clients’ fitness and strength.

The best thing when approaching a Personal Trainer is to have some ideas of what you want to achieve, e.g. weight loss, training to supplement sport, building muscle bulk, toning etc., and tell them what you want.

Is it possible to participate in personal training as a group?  And, does it work out cheaper per person if you train as a group?

Alan

Yes it is possible.  There are various types of group training, indoors or outdoors, boot camps, aerobic classes, weights circuit classes or cardio circuit classes.  Sometimes all male or female or mixed groups, certain ages e.g. over 50.

Group training really depends on the Trainer, how many days per week the Clients attend, and the type of training.

Training in a group can be heaps of fun, and most trainers are happy enough to discuss discount rates for group training.  It helps though if the group members have similar fitness or training goals.

Shane

Do you see there being any mental benefits of training with a Personal Trainer?

Alan

If Clients wish, a personal trainer can be a sounding board, where Clients can open up and discuss problems and issues, family, work etc. which can help improve their wellbeing and mental state by getting things ‘off their chest’.  Also, having an intense session in the gym or on the cardio machines is a great stress relief after a busy day at work.  Or having a early morning training session is a great way to start the day off, by getting the heart beating and the blood flowing so you hit the ground running when you get to work.

Shane

How would you find a good personal trainer?

Alan

I would suggest you approach it like other important decisions, e.g. buying a new fridge.  Ask your friends, family and colleagues for their opinion about the particular item or place.  Ask someone who has bought that item or used that facility.  And do some research e.g. on the internet.

Specifically with Personal Training, there are some other important considerations.

1/ How committed is the personal trainer?

2/ Look on internet for good reviews.

3/ Look at the location, and how close they are to your home or work.  Being close to home or work will reduce travel time and stress.

4/ Will I be the only person training there?

5/ Can I be the only person training there if I want to?

6/ Is the facility clean, safe and does the staff/management have a good reputation?

7/ Have a trial session and see how it goes.  Do you feel comfortable with the particular Personal Trainer and the gym, and does the trainer properly answer all your questions?

8/ Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Always discuss costs and the contract details.  Make sure you go right through and ask any questions you are concerned about or don't understand before signing up. Personal Trainer

Finally, whenever starting any training or exercise program, it is very important you are always truthful and open about any health issues you may have.  This is for your own safety, and so your Trainer can tailor your program’s intensity, type, duration and frequency accordingly.

Shane

Thank you Alan for your time today and answering all my questions.

When I first contacted Alan to train me, my thoughts were that I would give Alan a try, perhaps learn some skills then after a few months leave and work out on my own. Six years later Alan is still my personal trainer. When I started training with Alan I had a painful strain on my upper left arm and was unable to lift ... Read more
